What is the UNWG?

The United Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG) was founded in Vienna in 1967 as a voluntary organization, bringing together women connected with the United Nations. The purpose of the Guild is to work for the welfare of needy children everywhere. At the same time, the Guild fosters friendship among women of many nationalities, who gain an appreciation of each other’s traditions and customs. The UNWG in Vienna currently has more than 600 members from 90 countries, representing every continent.

What does the UNWG do?

Each year the UNWG sponsors and organizes an International Bazaar, which is our main fundraising activity. Since the first Bazaar was held 36 years ago, the UNWG has raised more than three million Euros. The money has been distributed to children’s charities in every continent. In addition, the UNWG raises funds for charities by selling handicrafts and international gift items at the Kiosk in the Visitors’ Centre of the Vienna International Centre. Other fundraising activities include a weekly White Elephant Boutique and Book Stall in the Vienna International Centre, and contributions from tours and other regular activities.

What is UNWG Charity for Children?

All UNWG members volunteer their time, effort, and skills without pay. We are proud that our selfless efforts help to make the world a little better for needy children everywhere. All funds raised are donated to charities for children and mother-child programmes in developing countries. An effort is made to allocate the funds so that support is provided to some United Nations sponsored projects, to some projects sponsored by Austrian or Austrian-based charities, and to some other projects benefiting children in developing countries.

Past donations have been used to purchase vaccines, medical and dental equipment for physically and mentally handicapped children, orthopaedic devices, building materials and furniture. A full listing of the recipients of the donations is available from the UNWG office and from the UNWG website at: www.iaea.org/unwg.
